Hire a driver

A car plus an English-speaking driver-guide is how most visitors see the island. Cheap labour and dear cars make the premium over driving yourself small.

US$70 to 80 All-inclusive, per day
Included Fuel and tolls
English Driver-guide language
Day rates by vehicleCar to premium SUV, with a driver
CarToyota Axio, Suzuki Alto Rs 12,000per day
Sedan or hybridToyota Axio, Premio Rs 15,500per day
SUVSuzuki Vitara Rs 22,500per day
Premium SUVToyota Prado, Land Cruiser Rs 29,500per day
VanToyota KDH, 6 to 10 seats on requestper day
Car The everyday choice, fine for two with light bags.
Sedan or hybrid More comfort and boot space on long inter-city days. The narrowest premium over self-drive of any class.
SUV Worth it for the park roads and the rougher interior.
Premium SUV Families, or anyone who wants the space. A Land Cruiser Sahara with a driver runs higher still.
Van Quoted on request by the day; the right call for a group or a lot of luggage.

All-inclusive means the vehicle, the fuel and the driver for the day. A US$70 to US$80 all-in car-and-driver day is common, and the premium over driving the same car yourself is only about LKR 3,500 to 7,500, because you are really just paying the driver.

What is includedAnd what stays on you
The vehicle and its fuel for the day
The driver, who doubles as a guide, and handles routes, parking and the checkpoints
On a multi-day trip, the driver's own meals and accommodation (good operators arrange this, confirm it is included)
Expressway tolls and ordinary parking, on all-inclusive rates

On you, not the driver

Your own entry tickets at the sights
Your meals and drinks
The driver's tip, which is customary and separate from the fare
A tip of roughly LKR 1,500 to 3,000 a day is customary for good service, more on a long multi-day trip. It is not built into the day rate.
How to choose a good driverThe qualification to ask for, and the red flags
1 Ask if they hold the Tourist Driver qualificationSri Lanka Tourism (SLTDA) runs a Tourist Driver programme; a qualified driver-guide is trained for exactly this work. Reputable pre-booked operators use qualified drivers and will say so.
2 Agree the rate, route and inclusions in writingBefore you set off, pin down the daily rate, roughly where you are going each day, and precisely what is included: fuel, tolls, the driver's meals and lodging on a tour. Vagueness here is where disputes start.
3 Read recent reviewsA driver-guide you spend a week with matters more than a hotel. Look for recent, specific reviews on the operator or the individual, not just a star rating.
4 Watch for the shopping detourA classic is the driver steering you into spice gardens, gem shops or batik places where they earn a commission. A good one asks first; if yours keeps "suggesting" stops you did not ask for, say so plainly.
5 Match the trip to the vehicleA car is fine for two on the main roads; take an SUV for the park tracks and a van for a group. Do not pay for a Prado you do not need, or cram four adults and bags into an Alto.
Where to bookEstablished operators, and how to compare

We do not publish a directory of individual drivers or agencies as recommendations unless they are verified. Below are established operators cited in our sourced rate data, for reference only; choose using the checklist above.

Malkey Rent A Car Institutional operator; published with-driver day rates.
Casons Rent A Car Long-established car and driver hire.
Is it right for you?The honest trade-off
Door-to-door, on your own schedule, with no driving stress on tricky roads
Local knowledge, language help and someone who handles the police and the parking
The paperwork and liability of self-driving disappear entirely

The downsides

Pricier than the trains and buses
A little less independence than a self-drive car
Quality varies, so the vetting above matters
