Journey times

Map distance lies in Sri Lanka. Ninety kilometres on the flat south coast is under two hours; the same distance into the hills can take five. These are real durations from timetables and tracked runs.

Why some routes crawl

The north: the train actually wins

Colombo to Jaffna is about 395 road km and every mode lands within an hour of the others: car 7 to 8 hours, bus 7.5 to 8.5, train 6.5 to 7.5. The Northern Line was rebuilt after the war for 120 km/h running on dead flat ground, so it sails past the traffic that clogs the A9. On this one corridor the train is both the cheapest and the fastest option.

The hill country: slowness is the point

Kandy to Ella is 130 road km yet takes 4 to 5 hours by car and 6 to 7 by train. The A5 is a chain of hairpins and the railway, engineered in the 1800s to carry tea down to the port, climbs 1-in-45 gradients that cap trains at 25 to 40 km/h. People still queue weeks ahead for the slowest option, because here the journey is the attraction.

The south: the expressway changed everything

The E01 turned a grinding 3 to 4 hour coastal crawl into a 1.5 to 2 hour run to Galle. Highway buses from Makumbura use it too and land within minutes of a private car for a fraction of the cost. If you are going anywhere between Colombo and Matara, take the expressway option, not the old A2.

The east is still the hard side

Trincomalee is 4 to 5 hours by car but 8 to 9 by train, because the eastern branch line is single track with old signalling. Arugam Bay has no railway at all: a 7 to 8 hour taxi, an 8 to 10 hour night bus, or a train to Ella or Batticaloa plus a long transfer. Budget a whole travel day for the east and do not plan anything for the evening you arrive.

What the expressway actually costs, and its rules

The network is a closed toll system: you take a ticket entering and pay by distance and vehicle class on the way out. A car from Colombo to Galle is about LKR 475, to Matara about LKR 625, and the airport road is the cheapest on the network. Lose the entry ticket and you are charged the maximum fare from the furthest possible entry point, so keep it somewhere safe. Motorcycles, tuk-tuks and tractors are banned outright, the limit is 100 km/h, and you cannot pull over on the shoulder for anything but an emergency. Save 1969, the single hotline covering the whole network, before you set off.

When flying actually earns its price

There is a small domestic air network, and it moves with the monsoon: the east coast from May to October, the south and hill country from November to April. It is worth the money in exactly three cases. Colombo to Trincomalee in summer, 45 minutes against five to six hours by road. Colombo to Jaffna year round on FitsAir from Ratmalana, under an hour against seven to eight, which buys back a whole day on a short trip. And Colombo to Castlereagh or Kandy in winter, thirty minutes instead of four hours of hairpins, if the mountain road would cost you a day you do not have. It is not worth it to the south coast, where the expressway already does Colombo to Galle in under two hours for a few hundred rupees. And never book a domestic flight as a same-day connection to an international departure: these are daylight-only visual-flight aircraft and weather cancels them far more often than it cancels a jet.

What blows these numbers out

Departure time first: Colombo to Dambulla is a comfortable 3.5 hours at 5am and closer to 5 hours if you leave at 4pm. Then weather, both monsoons bring landslides in the hills and flooding on the plains, and Main Line services get suspended outright for track washouts. Festival weeks and long weekends add their own hours.

Reading these times

Car and taxi times assume a direct hire using tolled expressways where they exist, with no sightseeing stops. Bus times are the fastest direct service including its normal halts. Train times are the fastest scheduled express or intercity service. Add time in monsoon weather and at peak hours.
