When to go
Galle, Mirissa, Unawatuna, Bentota and Hikkaduwa at their best. Surf cleanest Dec to Feb, and blue-whale season off Mirissa peaks Jan to Mar.
Arugam Bay's surf fires, best Jul to Sep; Nilaveli, Trincomalee and Pasikudah turn calm, clear and glassy. Driest window for the north too.
Shoulder months work on either coast, the island is a year-round beach destination thanks to its dual monsoon.
Pick your coast
Where Sri Lankan beach tourism began: polished Bentota, Kosgoda's turtle hatcheries, Hikkaduwa's coral sanctuary and reef-calm Unawatuna.
Weligama's beginner-friendly bay, advanced reefs at Midigama & Ahangama, Mirissa's whales and nightlife, then Tangalle's wild, empty bays.
Arugam Bay, the island's surf capital, plus Pasikudah's waist-deep shallows and the powder-white sands of Uppuveli & Nilaveli.
Casuarina Beach's shallow turquoise, Manalkadu's dunes, Mannar's wild horses, the least-developed coastline, for explorers.
Negombo minutes from the airport, Mount Lavinia's sunset strip, and Kalpitiya, the island's kite-surfing capital.
Surf, by level
Arugam Bay is a 10 km run of right-hand point breaks, Main Point, Whiskey Point, Peanut Farm and Elephant Rock. Water is 27 to 29C all year, no wetsuit needed.

Common questions
Which side of Sri Lanka has the best beaches right now?
It depends on the month: December to April favours the south and west (Mirissa, Unawatuna, Bentota); May to September the east (Arugam Bay, Nilaveli, Trincomalee).
When is the best time to surf Sri Lanka?
Southwest coast November to April with the cleanest waves December to February; east coast May to October peaking July to September. There is always a working coast.
Is it safe to swim at Sri Lankan beaches?
At the right beach in the right season, yes, but rips are real and lifeguards are rare. Swim where locals swim and treat monsoon-side surf with respect.
Where should a complete beginner learn?
Weligama Bay: two kilometres of soft sand bottom waves and dozens of schools. In the east season, Baby Point or Whiskey Point near Arugam Bay.
Which beach is best for surfing?
Arugam Bay is the flagship point break (May to September); Weligama is the gentle learner bay and Hikkaduwa and Midigama fill the south-coast season.
