When to go
Low water draws prey to the remaining lakes and leopard sightings peak, in May to July most Yala Block 1 morning drives find one. Block 1 closes around Sep to Oct to let the habitat recover.
The Gathering: 300 to 400 wild elephants converge on the receding tank, strongest Aug to Sep from about 4pm. The herds shift to Kaudulla around Oct to Nov, then Hurulu Dec to Jun.
Blue whale season off the south coast, 85 to 95 percent odds Jan to Mar, with Kalpitiya's giant spinner dolphin pods the same months; Trinco's sperm whale canyon takes over May to Sep.
The drier window for the wet-zone rainforest: better trails, more bird waves, fewer leeches.
Somewhere is always in season: match the park to the month and go at dawn or late afternoon. Turtles nest at Rekawa on night watches Nov to Apr.
Where the wild things are
The classic safari circuit: Yala Block 1's famous leopards plus Bundala's flamingo lagoons next door.
Ancient tank beds double as elephant country, easy to pair with Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa.
Sri Lanka's biggest park: jungle lakes (villus), leopards and sloth bears without the Yala crowds.
UNESCO rainforest with most of the island's endemic birds, walked with a tracker rather than driven.
Snorkel shallow coral with blacktip reef sharks and turtles off Nilaveli, May to September seas.
Star animals
No sighting is guaranteed, that is the point. Dawn drives, a good tracker and patience beat luck.

Common questions
Where’s the best place to see whales?
Mirissa on the south coast (Nov to Apr) for blue whales close to shore; Trincomalee on the east (May to Sep) when the south is rough; Kalpitiya for huge dolphin pods (Oct to May).
What’s the best time of year?
Follow the calm sea: south/west coast December to April, east coast May to September. Don’t book the wrong coast for the season or the sea will be too rough.
Can I swim with the whales?
No, in-water encounters with whales are illegal without a special government permit. Operators advertising “swim with whales” are breaking the rules and stressing the animals; avoid them.
I get seasick, any tips?
Take medication ~an hour before, choose a calm-season morning, sit low and central, keep your eyes on the horizon, and stay hydrated. The east coast in summer is usually the calmest water.
What is the single best month for wildlife in Sri Lanka?
July or August: peak leopard sightings, the elephant Gathering building to its height at Minneriya, and sperm whales over the Trincomalee canyon, all in one trip.
