It gets cold. Bring a layer, mornings are misty and highland evenings are genuinely chilly.
Book the train early. Reserve Second/Third Class Reserved seats about 30 days ahead on the railway portal (skip the sealed-window First Class).

Common questions

Is Ceylon tea actually different from other tea?

Yes, it’s defined by terroir and elevation. The Tea Board recognises seven regions; high-grown teas (Nuwara Eliya, Uva, Dimbula) are light and aromatic, low-grown (Ruhuna, Sabaragamuwa) are dark and full-bodied. The **Lion Logo** guarantees 100% pure, Sri-Lanka-packed Ceylon tea.

Which tea estate is best to visit?

For a deep technical tour plus a viewpoint, **Dambatenne + Lipton’s Seat** (Haputale). For ethics and artisanal tea, **Amba Estate** near Ella. For luxury, **Ceylon Tea Trails**. For history, **Loolkandura** near Kandy.

Is the Kandy to Ella train running?

As of 2026 the line was damaged by Cyclone Ditwah and ran only on the high Ambewela to Ella stretch, with full reinstatement expected early 2027. Always check live status; book Reserved 2nd/3rd class 30 days ahead.

How much should I tip a tea-estate guide?

At free/“tips expected” estates like Handunugoda, around Rs 200 to 500 is normal. State institutions (e.g. the National Spice Garden) prohibit tipping. Always tip in banknotes, not coins.

A driver offered a free tour that stops at a “tea/spice/gem” shop, should I go?

That’s the commission-detour scam. You’re under zero obligation to buy. Agree the route in advance, or use PickMe/Uber in cities, and politely decline unsolicited shopping stops.
