Flying inside Sri Lanka: seaplanes that follow the monsoon
Eight-seat amphibians landing on tea-country reservoirs, a network that swaps coasts twice a year, and the three routes where the fare is genuinely worth it. Most countries have a fixed domestic route map. Sri Lanka does not. Cinnamon Air relocates its entire scheduled operation with the monsoon: **the east coast from 1 May to 31 October**, when Trincomalee.

A network that physically moves twice a year
Most countries have a fixed domestic route map. Sri Lanka does not. Cinnamon Air relocates its entire scheduled operation with the monsoon: the east coast from 1 May to 31 October, when Trincomalee and Batticaloa are dry and the south is being hammered, and the south coast and hill country from 1 November to 30 April, when the pattern reverses and the European winter season arrives.
That means the route you read about last year may not exist on the dates you are travelling. Check which season you are landing in before you plan around a flight, because in the wrong half of the year the aircraft are simply on the other side of the island.

Why it is a seaplane at all
Daylight only, 07:00 to 17:00
The cabin is not pressurised
Your suitcase may travel by road
There are no overhead bins
The other airline, and why it uses a different airport
FitsAir does the opposite job. It started as a cargo carrier in 1997, became a low-cost passenger airline in 2022, and flies a 70-seat ATR 72 from Ratmalana, Colombo's secondary airport, rather than the international one. Ratmalana is much closer to the city, so the door-to-door time is shorter before the flight even starts.
Its Colombo to Jaffna route is the most useful domestic flight in the country for ordinary travellers: under an hour against seven to eight by road. Fares are unbundled across four tiers and Economy Basic includes no checked baggage at all, so the headline price is not the price you pay with a suitcase. Buy baggage online at least 24 hours ahead; adding it at the airport costs considerably more.

When the fare is actually worth it
On most routes it is not, and the honest answer matters more than the upsell. Three cases stand up.
Colombo to Trincomalee in summer, 45 minutes against five to six hours by car and eight or nine by train. Colombo to Jaffna year round, under an hour against seven to eight, which buys back an entire day on a short trip. And Colombo to Castlereagh or Kandy in winter, thirty minutes instead of four hours of hairpins, if a lost day costs you more than the ticket.
The case that has collapsed is the south coast. The E01 expressway now does Colombo to Galle in under two hours for a few hundred rupees in tolls, so paying for a flight to Koggala saves about an hour at enormous cost. Drive it, or take the highway coach.
