Pre-booked private transfers quote in foreign currency and usually undercut the counter on the long runs, closer to Rs 19,000 for Galle. Ride-hailing has no fixed price at all, roughly Rs 70 to 100 per kilometre, and is normally cheapest in daylight.

Two things catch people. The E03 expressway toll is usually excluded from a ride-hailing estimate, so the driver asks for it in cash at the barrier. And the cheapest option of all, the 24-hour Route 187 bus to Colombo Fort, charges a second full fare as a baggage surcharge if your bag is over 23 kg.
