How long Sri Lankan journeys really take

Ninety kilometres can mean ninety minutes or five hours. The rules of thumb that stop you overpacking a day. Map distance is a poor guide here. Kandy to Ella looks like 68 km in a straight line but the road runs 137 km of hairpins, so it takes 4 to 5 hours by car and 6 to 7.

The practical picture

Map distance is a poor guide here. Kandy to Ella looks like 68 km in a straight line but the road runs 137 km of hairpins, so it takes 4 to 5 hours by car and 6 to 7 by train. Colombo to Galle is a similar straight-line distance and takes under two hours on the E01 expressway.

Practical rules: about 60 to 70 km/h on the expressway corridor, about 40 km/h on ordinary A roads that run through every town centre, and half that again in the hill country. To the east, budget the whole day for the transfer and plan nothing for the evening you arrive.

Frequently asked

How long is Kandy to Ella?

Roughly 4 to 5 hours by car and 6 to 7 by train for 130 road km. The train is slower on purpose and worth taking early.

Is the train ever faster than the car?

In the north, yes. Colombo to Jaffna runs 6.5 to 7.5 hours by train against 7 to 8 by road, because the rebuilt line does 120 km/h across flat ground.

How many stops fit in one day?

Two or three on the south coast expressway, one move plus one sight in the hills, and in the east the transfer is the day.
