The practical picture

The Gathering, when 300 to 400 wild elephants converge on a receding ancient tank bed, is one of Asia's great wildlife events, but it moves. Minneriya is the classic stage from July to September, peaking in August and September. Early rains then push the herds to Kaudulla around October and November, and by the wet months they disperse toward Hurulu Eco Park.

Book the afternoon drive: the herds emerge to feed and bathe roughly 4pm to 6pm. Good local operators track exactly which park holds the elephants that week, so ask before you book rather than assuming Minneriya. A private jeep with entry fees runs about US$95 for a solo traveller, far less per head when a six-seater is shared.
