Colombo to Galle by rail: the ocean-side commuter classic
Two hours with the Indian Ocean at the window, sometimes close enough to feel the spray. The coastal line, done right. The coastal railway south from Colombo Fort to Galle is the everyday miracle of Sri Lankan rail: for two hours the track runs so close to the ocean that spray sometimes reaches the windows, through Mount Lavinia.
The journey
The coastal railway south from Colombo Fort to Galle is the everyday miracle of Sri Lankan rail: for two hours the track runs so close to the ocean that spray sometimes reaches the windows, through Mount Lavinia, Kalutara and the surf towns of Hikkaduwa.
It is largely unreserved commuter service, so travel off-peak, sit on the right heading south, and treat the open doorways with respect. At Galle, the Dutch fort is a ten-minute walk from the station.
