The four tiers
Sri Lankan stays fall into four clear bands. Family-run guesthouses and homestays run about US$10 to 65 a night with a home-cooked breakfast and endless local advice. Mid-range hotels (pools, AC, restaurants) sit at US$55 to 200. The island's signature tier is boutique heritage, restored colonial houses, tea bungalows and design villas at US$90 to 450. True luxury, the Aman tier and all-inclusive tea estates, starts around US$250 and peaks past US$1,600 in the winter holidays.
The honest headline: this is no longer purely a budget island, but a guesthouse-and-street-food trip remains one of Asia's great bargains.

The price flip: two monsoons, two peak seasons
Coastal prices swing 20 to 50 percent with the monsoons. The south and west peak December to March (European winter) and discount deeply May to September; the east coast does the exact opposite. Inland (Kandy, the Cultural Triangle) is far steadier year round.
The value window is October and November: shoulder weather, empty rooms, and the deepest discounts island wide. Watch for one catch in peak season, many resorts add compulsory Christmas and New Year gala-dinner supplements to the room rate.

Why the bill grows 34 percent
Registered hotels stack a 10 percent service charge, a 1 percent tourism levy, a 2.5 percent social levy and 18 percent VAT, compounding to about a 1.34 multiplier on the room rate. Rates marked "nett" already include it; anything "plus plus" does not.
Two useful wrinkles. Small guesthouses under the tax threshold legally skip VAT, part of why they undercut hotels so hard. And from April 2026 foreign booking platforms charge 18 percent VAT on their fees, so checking the hotel's own website or WhatsApp for a direct rate increasingly beats the OTA price.
Booking smart
Book December to March coastal stays well ahead, especially Galle Fort and the boutique south where supply is tiny. In the low season walk-in and same-week rates are heavily negotiable, especially for multi-night stays.
For the famous one-offs (Tea Trails bungalows, Amanwella, 98 Acres) there is no cheap season trick, only early booking. Everywhere else, October and November deliver the same rooms for a fraction of the January price.
