General health guidance for travellers, vaccination advice, water safety, where to find pharmacies and hospitals, and why travel insurance matters. Requirements depend on your home country and travel history; routine vaccines (MMR, tetanus, hepatitis A/B, typhoid) are commonly recommended for South Asia travel. A yellow fever certificate is only required if arriving from a country with risk of transmission.
Vaccines
Requirements depend on your home country and travel history; routine vaccines (MMR, tetanus, hepatitis A/B, typhoid) are commonly recommended for South Asia travel. A yellow fever certificate is only required if arriving from a country with risk of transmission.
Check with a licensed travel clinic or your doctor 4 to 6 weeks before departure, recommendations change and depend on your itinerary (e.g. rural/jungle areas raise malaria and dengue considerations).
Water & food safety
Stick to bottled or filtered water; avoid ice from unknown sources outside hotels/reputable restaurants. Street food is generally safe at busy, high-turnover stalls, use judgement on hygiene as you would anywhere.
Dengue and mosquito-borne illness exist islandwide; use repellent, especially at dawn/dusk, and cover up in the evenings.
Pharmacies & hospitals
Pharmacies are common in towns and can fill many prescriptions (brand names differ from home). Private hospitals in Colombo and larger towns offer faster care than government hospitals for non-emergencies; see the Emergency page for hotlines and nearest facilities.
Travel insurance
Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical evacuation is strongly recommended, private healthcare and repatriation can be costly without it. Confirm your policy covers activities you plan (diving, hiking, surfing).
