PickMe and Uber: the honest per-kilometre

The ride-hailing app PickMe has largely tamed the old tuk-tuk haggle. Fares are set in the app, not by the driver, and recalculated at the end for real traffic. As a rule of thumb in 2026: a tuk-tuk runs about LKR 80 to 100 per km (as low as LKR 68 in quiet conditions), a Mini car (WagonR) about LKR 115 to 120, a sedan about LKR 140, and a KDH van about LKR 160.

Two things the estimate hides: expressway tolls are paid in cash by you at the plaza, and multi-stop waiting time runs about LKR 10 per minute. If a street tuk-tuk says the meter is broken, open the app instead.

Buses: cheap, everywhere, newly dearer

Buses go to every corner of the island for very little. A fare revision on 6 July 2026 lifted the minimum fare to LKR 34 and raised longer fares by 12 to 20 percent. Fares follow a fixed stage table rather than a flat per-km rate, and service class adds a multiplier: Semi-Luxury about 1.2x, Luxury (AC) about 1.3x, Super-Luxury about 1.85x.

A worked example: Colombo to Kandy is about LKR 770 in a normal bus, LKR 1,001 in AC Luxury and LKR 1,425 in Super-Luxury. Expressway coaches use flat route fares instead: Colombo (Makumbura) to Matara is a flat LKR 700.

Trains: the cheapest scenic ride on earth

Fares by corridor and class. Tap to expand.

Colombo to Kandy
3rd class unreserved about LKR 185 to 240, 2nd class reserved about LKR 1,200, 1st class AC about LKR 2,000. Under 3 hours.
Kandy to Ella (the famous one)
2nd class reserved about LKR 600 to 800, 1st class AC about LKR 1,300 to 1,600. Reserved seats open 30 days ahead and sell out fast.
Colombo to Galle (coastal)
3rd class about LKR 150 to 200, 2nd class about LKR 300 to 400, 1st class AC about LKR 600 to 990. Mostly unreserved.
Colombo to Jaffna (northern)
2nd class reserved about LKR 500 to 850, 1st class AC about LKR 1,000 to 1,700.
Ella Odyssey (tourist train)
A dedicated premium service: 2nd class about LKR 4,000, 1st class AC LKR 5,000 and up. Priced separately from the commuter fares above.

Booking trains without the markup

Add-on surcharges are flat: an Intercity Express adds about LKR 150, and the coveted 1st class observation saloon adds about LKR 1,000. Because reserved tickets are so cheap and open only 30 days out, they vanish within hours on the Kandy to Ella run.

That scarcity feeds a resale market. Agents and hotels will happily sell you a LKR 3 ticket for USD 10 to 20. If you can, book the moment reservations open through Sri Lanka Railways channels; otherwise travel unreserved in 2nd or 3rd class, which always has room if you board early.

Getting from the airport

From Bandaranaike International (about 32 km north of Colombo), the E03 expressway makes the run 20 to 30 minutes. Cheapest is the route 187 highway bus to Colombo Fort at LKR 100 to 150. Easiest once you have data is a PickMe sedan at about LKR 2,000 to 2,500. A pre-booked meet-and-greet private car runs LKR 8,500 to 11,000.

Heading straight to the coast or hills, use a fixed-price transfer rather than a metered app: expect about LKR 3,500 to 5,500 to Negombo, LKR 16,000 to 20,000 to Galle, and LKR 15,000 to 19,000 to Kandy.

Ferries in the north

The Nagapattinam (India) to Kankesanthurai passenger ferry resumed in 2026, an ordinary one-way seat around LKR 16,000 to 22,000 for the roughly 4-hour crossing, bypassing the long air route through Colombo.

To reach Delft Island off Jaffna, take the free Sri Lanka Navy ferry from Kurikadduwan Jetty (up to three times daily); the private passenger boat is a subsidised LKR 150 if the navy vessel is full.
