Why the map lies

Sri Lanka is small, so travellers routinely plan three stops in a day and then lose the whole day to one drive. The problem is that straight-line distance means almost nothing here. Kandy to Ella looks like 68 km on a map; the road that actually connects them runs 137 km of hairpins, so the ratio between the two is over two to one.

The reverse is true in the south. Colombo to Galle is 105 km straight and 116 km by the E01 expressway, a ratio of 1.10, and you cover it in about 1 hour 45. Same island, same rough distance, wildly different days. Any planning rule based on an average speed will overestimate the south and badly underestimate the hills.

Four rules that survive contact with reality

One: on the expressway corridor (Colombo to Galle, Mirissa, Matara) assume roughly 60 to 70 km/h door to door and take the highway bus if you are not in a car, it lands within minutes of a taxi. Two: on ordinary A and B roads assume about 40 km/h, because they run straight through every town centre.

Three: in the hill country halve that again. Colombo to Ella is 200 km and takes 5.5 to 6.5 hours by car, 8.5 to 10 by train. Four: to the east, budget a whole travel day and plan nothing for the evening you arrive.

Corridor by corridor

North: the train actually wins
Colombo to Jaffna is about 395 km and every mode lands within an hour of the others: car 7 to 8 hours, bus 7.5 to 8.5, train 6.5 to 7.5. The Northern Line was rebuilt after the war for 120 km/h running across dead-flat ground, so the train sails past the traffic that clogs the A9. It is the one long corridor where rail is both cheapest and fastest.
Hills: the slowness is the product
Kandy to Ella is 130 road km: 4 to 5 hours by car, 6 to 7 by train. The railway was engineered in the 1800s to bring tea down to the port, with 1-in-45 gradients that cap trains at 25 to 40 km/h. People still book the slowest option weeks ahead, because on this stretch the journey is the attraction, not the transfer.
South: the expressway changed the maths
The E01 turned a 3 to 4 hour coastal crawl into a 1.5 to 2 hour run to Galle. Air-conditioned highway buses from Makumbura use the same road on regulated fares. Whatever your budget, take the expressway option rather than the old A2, which is now mostly local traffic and lorries dodging the toll.
East: still the hard side
Trincomalee is 4 to 5 hours by car but 8 to 9 by train, because the eastern branch is single track with old signalling. Arugam Bay has no railway at all: a 7 to 8 hour taxi, an 8 to 10 hour night bus, or a train to Ella or Batticaloa plus a long road transfer. This friction is exactly why the east still feels less trampled.

What blows the estimate

Departure time is the biggest single factor on the road. Colombo to Dambulla is a comfortable 3.5 hours if you leave at 5am and closer to 5 hours leaving at 4pm, purely because of ribbon development and commuter traffic on the A6. Leaving early is the cheapest upgrade in Sri Lankan travel.

Then weather. Both monsoons bring landslides in the central hills and flooding on the plains, and Main Line trains get suspended outright when the track washes out. Add festival weeks and long weekends, when the whole island is on the move at once.

Frequently asked

How long does Kandy to Ella take?

About 4 to 5 hours by car and 6 to 7 by train for just 130 km. The train is slower on purpose and worth it; take the earliest one.

Is the train faster than driving in Sri Lanka?

Only in the north. Colombo to Jaffna by train is 6.5 to 7.5 hours against 7 to 8 by car. Everywhere else the road is quicker, though rarely more enjoyable.

How many places can I visit in a day?

On the south coast expressway, two or three towns is realistic. In the hill country, one move plus one sight is a full day. In the east, treat any transfer as the day.

How long from Colombo airport to the south coast?

Roughly 2 hours to Bentota, 2.5 to Galle and 3 to Mirissa by car using the expressways, longer if you land in the evening rush.
