How pricing works in 2026
Sri Lanka runs a three-tier gate system at almost every state-run site: non-SAARC foreigner, SAARC foreigner, and local resident. Premium heritage sites and national parks are priced in US dollars (you can pay the rupee equivalent at the day rate), which shields them from currency swings; temples, museums and gardens are priced in rupees.
Two things changed the maths in 2026. An 18 percent VAT now sits on most foreign tickets, service charges and vehicle permits, so the number on a blog is rarely the number at the gate. And a mid-2025 policy made entry free for local children under 18 at 26 major archaeological sites, while foreign children (roughly 6 to 12) usually pay about half the adult rate and under-6s go free.

The Cultural Triangle
Sigiriya is the single most expensive cultural ticket at USD 35 (the ticket covers the water gardens, the summit and the museum). Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura are USD 30 each and cover vast sites, so budget a bicycle or tuk-tuk to get around the ruins.
The smart-money play: Pidurangala, right next to Sigiriya, gives you a view OF Sigiriya (arguably the better photo) for LKR 1,000, about USD 3. Dambulla Cave Temple is LKR 2,000, but you must buy the ticket in cash at the office at the base before you climb.
National parks: the four-part formula
A park gate price is not one number. The Department of Wildlife Conservation adds up a passenger base fee (USD 25 adult at the top parks), a vehicle fee (about LKR 300 for a jeep), a service charge of about USD 10 per group if any foreigner is aboard, then puts 18 percent VAT on the lot. A solo foreign adult at Yala pays roughly USD 42 to 45 for the permit alone, before the USD 25 to 60 half-day jeep hire.
This is why sharing pays. Fill a six-seat jeep and the fixed service and vehicle fees spread out, dropping the per-person entry to about USD 31. A mandatory tracker (LKR 1,500 per group, cash) rides along at most parks.

Temples and sacred sites
The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy raised its foreign ticket to LKR 3,000 from 1 July 2026 (the SAARC tier, which uniquely includes Thailand and Myanmar, is LKR 2,500). Locals enter free. Dress code covers shoulders and knees, and shoe storage is a nominal LKR 50.
Elsewhere stays gentle: Aukana Buddha and Isurumuniya are about LKR 1,000, and many urban temples such as Gangaramaya run on a donation of a couple of dollars.

Gardens, zoos and museums
The botanical gardens (Peradeniya, Hakgala and their siblings) share one tariff: about LKR 3,540 for a foreign adult. The Colombo National Museum is a bargain at LKR 1,500, while the Lotus Tower observation deck is a flat USD 20.
On elephants, know the difference: Pinnawala is a commercial orphanage (USD 17.70, with bathing and feeding add-ons), while the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home is a rehabilitation project with distant viewing only, at about USD 5. The Transit Home is the ethical, cheaper visit and pairs perfectly with an Udawalawe safari.
What is free (or nearly)
The best of the hill country and the coast costs nothing. The Nine Arch Bridge, Little Adam's Peak and walking Galle Fort are all free. Ella Rock now has a small community fee of about LKR 930 collected near the top, and Lipton's Seat charges an estate gate fee of LKR 500 to 550.
The lesson for a tight budget: swap the USD 35 Sigiriya climb for the USD 3 Pidurangala one, spend your gate savings on food and tuk-tuks, and let the free viewpoints carry the trip.
